A singer-songwriter, guitarist from Dayton, Ohio, Eric Jerardi’s music is weathered with raw finesse, equal parts grit, groove and grace. Since 1997, he has released 10 nationally distributed albums, each one a milestone in his evolution as a soul-soaked blues-rock artist. Jerardi is one of Dayton’s most notable musicians with a career spanning more than two decades. He has released seven albums since 1997 and has worked with some of the industry’s best producers and musicians, from producer David Z (Prince, Fine Young Cannibals, Johnny Lang) to recording with famed keyboardist Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers Band, Eric Clapton).
Directed by Allen Farst, the cinematic video “Thorns & Roses” depicts Jerardi driving a 1963 yellow Stingray Corvette with split window, through quiet, after-midnight streets. Two female roller skaters are featured in the nighttime journey, carefree and young, their movements fluid. The rain adds mood and texture to this slinky number of slow blues-rock with standup bass, piano, organ, drums and the masterful Jerardi on vocals and guitar.
The contrast of the joyful, young roller-skaters and Jerardi’s somber expression is a stark one. The skaters embody freedom, agility and possibility. He can’t turn back the clock to experience that again himself, but the vintage Corvette and vintage 1967 Strat that Jerardi plays in the video, serve as symbols of value over newness. The older these items are, the more valuable they become. Both the guitar and Corvette also introduce history and personal stories intertwined with the people who own them.
